Ice Storm Update

Well, we've been blasted. Seems 2007 came in this way. My son is out taking pictures now.

This storm has been such a devasting thing for our trees. We could hear limbs popping and falling last night. DS went out to move his car from under the elms along the driveway, and ours would have already been smushed if they hadn't been in the garage.

My dh is great about keeping the trees trimmed, so we had nothing major hit the house, just a few smaller branches which was enough to wake us during the night. Our neighbor is left with a trunk in his yard and a zillion ice-sheathed branches in his yard.

Currently we are without power. We were going to wait it out because we were out for awhile last night but it was restored. But only for 45 minutes. Dh has been checking through the neighborhood we've found that at least two homeowners have had their power meters torn right off the house from the weight of the ice and another has his power line lacing his chain link fence. So it may be some time before power is restored here. The house is down to 60*. We'll probably end up trudging out to my in-laws. So far their power is holding and they have a generator if it goes.

The next worse thing is travel. I'm so thankful all my family is home safe and sound. I feel for the mail carriers and the UPS guys; a friend of our stayed the night here because he delivers for UPS and wanted to be closer to work this morning. The death toll from this storm has come so far from traffic fatalities. I would be a nervous wreck if mine were out in this.

One of the area high schools went up in flames last night. I'm looking for a weather forecast because last I heard this was to continue till Wednesday morning. We really don't need any more freezing rain.

Hope to post pictures later.

{{{{{Carolyn}}}}} It sounds as though it's gorgeous in some ways just to look at, but overall sounds dreadful. Poor trees. And the aftermath is not fun to think about, either. I know a few things about cleaning up branches and branches and branches and MORE branches! I was so glad to find your blog posted. I hope you don't have to travel anywhere and can keep warm in the meantime. Our rain is supposed to change over to snow later today, which means a slippery layer will no doubt form beneath the snow. 'Tis the season, I suppose. Bleckkhh. hugs to all! ~S
